How a ski vacation turned into a move

Most ski trips end with tired legs and too much laundry. Ours ended with real estate listings in two different states.

In January, Park City was just another pin on our skiing map. But after one dinner with an old co-worker of my husband’s and his wife, the idea of living here stuck in our heads. We left Utah with more than just lift ticket stubs — we left with a question we couldn’t shake.

By April, curiosity had turned into action. We mapped a road trip from Texas through New Mexico and Colorado, with plans for a week in Park City before continuing on to Salt Lake City. At the very same time, our Austin house (The Urban Farmouse Project) had just hit the real estate market. One chapter was being wrapped up even as we were exploring the start of another.

Nothing says “casual spring vacation” quite like refreshing Zillow while your own house is being toured by strangers 1,200 miles away.

We never made it to Salt Lake. Instead, we cancelled the hotel and spent our free time wandering open houses in Park City, picturing a new life taking shape in the mountains while our old life was quietly winding down back in Austin.

The decision wasn’t some grand moment. It was just the slow, steady realization that both doors — leaving and arriving — were opening at the same time.

By the time we packed up the car to head home, we knew: this wasn’t the end of a road trip. It was the beginning of a move.
