The Democratic Party is one of the oldest in the world, starting in 1792 when Thomas Jefferson founded it to fight for the bill of rights against the Federalists party. Democrats have a liberal view on how the government and the political system should be.
• There are many different issues that the United States are facing right now. A major issue is the lack of health care that many Americans have. Millions of Americans are uninsured or under insured. Democrats believe that getting quality health insurance policies to Americans is a top priority. A democrat is likely to believe in an universal health care policy where everyone has access to quality health care. This is also called health care reform.
• Democrats believe that every child is entitled to a good education no matter what their financial standing may be. The democrats recently formed a political action committee known as the Democrats for Education Reform. A democrat point of views relies on encouraging the public education reform and making college more affordable to students. One way that the democrats want to accomplish this is by cutting interest rates on student loans.
• Democrats have a strong political stance when it comes to abortion rights. While the republicans believe that abortion rights should be abolished, except on the grounds of rape or incest, a democrat believes that it is a woman’s right to choose whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term.
• The democrats are said to represent a party that promotes the improvement of life for the average American. This means that democrats believe in creating programs that will benefit the lower and middle classes. This includes welfare to work programs, low cost health care programs, and educational benefits. A democrat believes in tax increases, especially for the rich. Democrats believe that increasing taxes provides an economic stimulus for the country. Republicans argue that taxes should not be substantially increased for any income bracket. Republicans work especially hard to protect the assets of the rich.
• As of 2004, there were 72 million registered democrat voters. This makes the Democratic Party the largest political party in the world. Although this has not stopped many republicans from taking over important political offices, there have been many famous democrat presidents of the United States. Some examples are Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Linden Johnson, John F. Kennedy and most recently, America’s first African American present, Barack Obama.
Many individuals of the lower and middle classes vote democrat. However, many poor southerners still choose to vote republican, even though the republicans tend to be a political party that have the best interests of the wealthy in mind.
